The former Athletic Bilbao star is prepared to slot into defence should his new boss require it, but has stressed he has not yet discussed tactics with his compatriot
Javi Martinez claims he would be happy to play in defence for Bayern Munich if head coach Pep Guardiola opts to use him as centre-back.

The Spain international has mainly featured as holding midfielder since his move from Athletic Bilbao to Bayern in 2012, although he has previously lined up as part of the back four.

It has been suggested that Guardiola would opt to move the 24-year-old into defence in order to accommodate new midfield signings Thiago and Mario Gotze, and Martinez would be happy to adapt to his new coach's demands.

"Guardiola is the coach and I will play wherever he decides to use me," Martinez told TZ when questioned on whether he would be open to a role as centre-back.

"We have not spoken about this yet, though, so I do not know what Pep has in mind.

"For now, the most important thing for me is to reach the same fitness levels as the players who have been training a bit longer already. I intend to take things one step at a time."

Martinez made 43 appearances for Bayern in all competitions last season as they won the Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB Pokal.
